Plasmas, Electon Facilities, Cooling (PEC)

LAF

The Plasmas, Electron facilities and Cooling (PEC) section is responsible for providing theoretical and experimental expertise in the field of plasma wakefield acceleration, the design, commissioning and operation of electron facilities, the cooling for ion and antiproton beams, and electron beam ion sources for highly charged ions,  in particular:

  • Numerical and experimental studies, coordination and operation of the AWAKE facility.
  • Operation and upgrade of the CLEAR user facility. Support and expertise to the users for the design, implementation and analysis of their experimental setups.
  • Upgrade and support of the AWAKE experiment towards first particle physics applications as well as of CLEAR towards a possible injector of a future Higgs factory.
  • Study and design of new acceleration experiments based on proton driven plasma wakefield acceleration and related EU projects.
  • Supervision and support of the low-energy radioactive ion Penning trap and the EBIS charge breeder at REX-ISOLDE.
  • Study, improve and exploit the test bench dedicated to the production and manipulation of low-energy highly charged ions.
  • Contribute to Physics Beyond Colliders with beam physics and cooling studies to extend the physics reach of the AD/ELENA facility and ions across the complex.

The section hosts the coordination of AWAKE project.
